THE HIGHER CALLING

"Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."(Luke 5:8b)
There's a higher calling for every child of God. A calling that we cannot accept until we are delivered like Peter. Peter was introduced to Jesus by Andrew his brother.(John 1:41-42) Immediately Jesus sighted Peter, He called him Rock; pointing to the the role God chose Peter to play in the body of Christ. But Peter wasn't ready yet, as a trained fisherman who knew his prospects. He vehemently refused and went back to fishing, until Jesus delivered him from catching fish.( Luke 5:1-11)
What did Jesus do? First, the confidence Peter had in his knowledge, training, skills and exposure failed him. Secondly, He understood that it takes more than all these mentioned above, to be a good fisherman. That It takes the mercy of God.

I wish that we will understand that our efforts are nothing without God's mercy. That you are successfully in your career, profession, vocation and business is because of God's mercy. When Jesus finished engaging Peter's boat for a while, He told him to launch out into the deep, for a catch. By Peter's logical reasoning and professional calculations and deductions, this will be a waste of effort, but he reluctantly obeyed. The result thereof was a proof to Peter that beyond his knowledge, training, skills and exposure, that he needs God's mercy to be a successful fisherman. Few hours of serving Jesus with his fishing boat, he caught a great multitude of fishes that would have taken him years to see.

Assuming today, God grants all your dreams, career goals and heart desires. What else will you live for, what purpose will your career serve beyond fame and making money. That was Peter's deliverance, serving God and with little effort he was embarrassed with fishes beyond his imagination. Peter realised his sin and folly and it was clear to him that working for God who gives men power to make wealth wouldn't be a bad idea, since in His service He will not only take care of you but can grant your career dreams, vocational, professional, and business dreams that would have taken you years to attain, in few seconds.

The resultant effect of this exposition is that Peter and his colleagues abandoned everything and followed Jesus. Since their career dreams had already been met the road was cleared for pursuit of higher calling. To pursue our higher calling, we must come to that point when we realize that all our career and life dreams, that we want to exhaust our years on earth to pursue wouldn't take much for God to do it for us, if only we can answer the higher calling.

Many of us are in need of such deliverance that Peter received, until then we may not subdue the darkness in our world and our light will not really shine brighter. Sincerely, we are answers to some of our prayer points. I am sure while Moses was in midian he was praying for the deliverance of his people from Egypt, but when God answered the prayer, he nearly frustrated it due to his unwillingness to step into his higher calling. Many of us pray for good leaders, good government, better society, better this, and better that. My question is this, what are you currently doing about your prayer points? May be you are waiting for a savior from the moon, an angel from heaven, some of the popular people you know or a man you have never heard of to bring the change. Assuming God declare to you today that the solution of Nigeria is in your hands, what will be your reaction? will you believe? will you take the necessary steps? Truly, we are too busy catching fish but praying for answers in our hands.
